The Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining the city's thoroughfares. Fixing potholes and plowing snow are all part of that mission.

Regular street sweeping routes begin May 1st and end October 31stweather permitting. Sweeping begins at 5:00 am and ends at 11:00 am.

ORDINANCE 2018-1

Amending Ordinance 2012-15, Regulating Parking within the City of Hazleton During the Snow Season for Snow Removal and/or Plowing and Establishing a Schedule of Fines for Violations Defined in the Various Classifications of Said Regulations

WHEREAS, it is necessary for the general health, welfare and safety of the public and the citizens of the City of Hazleton that parking be regulated within the City for snow removal and plowing.; and

WHEREAS, the City of Hazleton adopted Ordinance 2012-15 in order to address this matter; and

WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of City officials that the snow season dates and snow ban parking locations must be amended, and certain terminology used in the Ordinance must be expanded and/or redefined.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY ORDAINED AND ENACTED by the Council of the City of Hazleton, as follows:

  1. Ordinance 2012-15 at Section 2, is amended as follows:

The snow season, for the purpose of this Ordinance, shall be defined as the period beginning November 1st, up to and including the period ending March 31st of the following year.

  1. Ordinance 2012-15 at Section 3, Subsection A, is amended as follows:
  1. In any year in which the snow season begins in an even year, any/all vehicular parking will not be allowed on the side of the street, avenue, road, court or alley which the house numbers are even numbers. In any year in which the snow season begins in an odd year, any and all vehicular parking will not be allowed on the side of the street, avenue, road, court or alley which the house numbers are odd numbers.
  1. Ordinance 2012-15 at Section 3, Subsection C, is amended as follows:
  1. After the 48-hour period immediately following the snowfall has passed, or once an emergency period is declared over, parking shall be allowed on both sides of the street, except where otherwise prohibited or restricted by any other reason under any other ordinance. Should the snowfall be so   severe that it cannot be cleared within 48 hours immediately following the snowfall, the Mayor and/or Department of Public Works Foreman may order, with due public announcement through newspaper, television, radio and/or other means, including, but not limited to, social media outlets and/or mobile Public Address (PA) systems, additional time for the parking ban.

BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that all relevant ordinances, regulations and policies of the City of Hazleton not amended hereby will remain in full force and effect; and

BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that if any provision, paragraph, word, section, subsection, sentence or clause of this Ordinance is held to be invalid by any court of competent jurisdiction, such decision will not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this Ordinance; and

BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that any ordinance or part of an ordinance conflicting with the provisions of this Ordinance, including the ordinance cited herein, is repealed to the extent of such conflict.
